1990s
During the 1990s, Murray departs from her involvement with heavily built-out sculpturally defined paintings, pursuing instead and equally elaborate yet flatter designed compositions. These compositions retain both multi- and single-paneled approaches. A chromatic exuberance defines this decade.
Curates the exhibition Artist’s Choice—Elizabeth Murray: Modern Women at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (’95). In the history of the Museum, this was the second exhibition dedicated to women artists. Completes NYC Transit mural project at 59th Street/Lexington Station called Blooming (’96).
Prominent solo exhibitions include a retrospective of Murray’s prints at Barbara Krakow, Boston (’90), which travels to Museum of Art at Olin Arts Center, Lewiston, David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University, Davison Art Center at Wesleyan University, and Florida Gulf Coast Art Center, Belleair. Solo exhibitions include Locks Gallery (’93, ‘95); Gemini G.E.L. at Joni Moisant Weyl, New York (’93); Paula Cooper Gallery, New York (’94); John Berggruen Gallery, San Francisco (’94); Richard Feigen Gallery, Chicago (’95); Thomas Segal Gallery, Boston (’96); PaceWildenstein, New York (’96, ’97, ‘99).
