<image:title>News - Event: Panel Discussing the Life and Legacy of EM</image:title>
<image:caption>This panel, held in conjunction with a solo presentation of the artist's work curated by Carroll Dunham and Dan Nadel at CANADA, is moderated by writer Linda Yablonsky and will discuss Murray’s art, life and legacy with artists Yevgeniya Baras, Deborah Kass, Suzanne Mcclelland, Kianja Strobert, Judy Hudson, and Pat Steir. Sat, Jan 14 @ 4pm CANADA, 333 Broome Street, NYC RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/elizabeth-murray-a-panel-discussion-tickets-30809170057 This event is present by Estate of Elizabeth Murray in collaboration with CANADA. Throughout her four-decade career Elizabeth Murray (1940-2007) redefined the world of painting by producing a singularly innovative body of work. Warping, twisting, and knotting her constructed canvases, she transformed painting's conventions with her vivid colors, boldly inventive forms, and shaped, constructed, multi-paneled canvases. Murray’s work often featured domestic objects—coffee cups, glasses, spoons, chairs, tables, and shoes—by which the artist subverts the viewer's notion of the familiar. Stoically, she plowed through the male-dominated art world to make way for her art and by doing so, cleared a way for a generation of women artists. <image:caption>Oil on canvas 133 x 120 in. (337.8 x 304.8 cm) Private Collection Commentary / Description: "When I first developed the two panels of Join, it wasn't a formal choice. I was thinking of two profiles touching. The white and black lines were a joke, I suppose, because it is so blatant to separate something with white and black. But it also is about white and black, those kind of polar thoughts. It was hard to let myself be so outrageously passionate with the color; although the painting conceals a lot, I like that the color belies the grief in the paint. It was a time when I was starting to put things together emotionally. Somebody came in to look at the paintings and said, "Oh, that's a broken heart." It made me cringe for a few seconds; here I am, I'm forty years old and I'm painting broken hearts." - Elizabeth Murray in Elizabeth Murray: Paintings and Drawings, Dallas Museum of Art, exhibition catalogue, 1987, p. 40</image:caption>

Gibson Fund (2004.18a&b) Commentary / Description: "The way Breaking happened was that I had four panels. I had done two paintings and was going to do two more, but I didn't really want to. Since I still was interested in those shapes, I put them down on the floor and looked at them together. It was enormous step because it had never occurred to me to break up or use the shapes together. Immediately a specific image occurred to me: a beer glass. Later, I remembered that little beer glass painting I had done in 1970-71; but here I wanted to pay homage to Synthetic Cubism, which I owe a lot to. Cubism just fits perfectly: it's like seeing somebody wearing a dress that you easily could jump into I was starting to think about shattering then and about sculpture again. It occurred to me that the center was absent, that the negative could be positive. I understood right away that the heart is in the center. The beer glass is breaking in half in an illusionistic as well as in a physical, and that's the first time I realized that I could do both at once. I was nervous about those yellow lines which are like surprise marks in cartoons. It's like taking a line and using it as a word, which is something that fascinates me." — Elizabeth Murray in Elizabeth Murray: Paintings and Drawings, Dallas Museum of Art, exhibition catalogue, 1987, p. 42</image:caption>

The Edward and Althea Budd Fund, Adele Haas Turner and Beatrice Pastorius Turner Fund and funds contributed by Marion Stroud Swingle and Lorine E. Vogt Commentary / Description: "I did Just in Time the summer that Bob [Holman] and I fell in love. That's what the title is about. It's the first painting in which I knew I was going to do a cup inside of those shapes. The smoke or steam is very static in this painting which I don't enjoy now, but then I went wild with all the sensual color. The drawing is tight; it's a real still life." —Elizabeth Murray in Elizabeth Murray: Paintings and Drawings, Dallas Museum of Art, exhibition catalogue, 1987, p. 50</image:caption>

The work, composed in four parts, seems to come alive through her unique process of shaping and sculpting her stretcher/supports. By no means a purely abstract painter, Murray evokes associative experiences in her work. “Everything I have done and experienced gets into the work somehow or another,” Murray said. “My childhood, my family life. I am a woman, I’m a mom, I’m a wife, I’m a painter. All of it gets in there.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oil on canvas 109 x 63 x 6 in (276.9 x 160 x 15.2 cm) Collection of the Murray-Holman Family Trust, New York Commentary (by Jason Andrew for the Murray-Holman Family Trust): Though much of her work was inspired by domestic interiors—tables, chairs, windows, cups and saucers—Elizabeth Murray sought to introduce a different perspective in the making of this painting. In Moonbeam, she aspired to bring the outside world in. Historian Joan Simon interpreted the painting like a Chinese landscape with its vertical layering and interior organization. Murray agreed, “It does, because the first thing I did to it was I built up the paint in the middle like a ridge, and then drew a line through it so there’s this diagonal thing that makes it look like land, sky tilting over. That is something I have been thinking about. I’ve been thinking about how to get the outside, the exterior, into the paintings.”[1] “Moonbeam,” Murray said, “is a bed with two pillows.”[2] But it is certainly much more. Playing with the architectural frame, Murray takes the four corners of the bedposts and turns them back into the painting where they toss around with pillows and a bed sheet. The title of the painting refers to the moonbeam that enters the painting from the upper right and cuts a long diagonal through the center, exiting lower left. “I saw what happened when I made that line through it,” Murray explains, “that it divided into two separate places, and it’s funny how those things come out. It’s a need I feel. I want that in my work. So it’s not just a depiction of the inside of an interior, which I think has been very much part of the work for a long time.”[3] Moonbeam made its debut in Elizabeth Murray’s first major show at PaceWildenstein in 1997, following her move from Paula Cooper Gallery which represented her work from the mid-1970s. “The new canvases look good, seemingly unruffled by the change of venue,” wrote Roberta Smith, “They show Ms. Murray continuing to navigate the idiosyncratic line of her own invention between domesticity and abstraction.”[4] The wrapping of structure and form from the outside in can also been seen as a kind of embrace. Similar compositions were thought out in paintings What is Love (collection of Speed Art Museum) from a year earlier, and Could Be, painted a year later. Both paintings seem to be meditations on snuggling—the simplest of comforts a couple can enjoy. “By the time Murray is finished synthesizing the image, the human element had morphed into […] a state of somnolent distress,” as described by Rob Storr, “togetherness and solitude, warmth and coldness, peace and disquiet?”[5] These are all questions Murray asks and responds to in Moonbeam. __________ [1] Murray, Elizabeth in An Interview with Elizabeth Murray (exhibition catalogue) New York: PaceWildenstein, 17. <image:title>1990's - Maybe Tree, 1998</image:title>
<image:caption>Oil on canvas 97 x 92 x 6 in (246.4 x 233.7 x 15.2 cm) Collection of the Murray-Holman Family Trust, New York Commentary by Jason Andrew for the Murray-Holman Family Trust: Maybe Tree, painted in the first half of 1998, is a painting that was inspired by a series of works responding to landscape: Riverbank (1997) (Collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York) and Summer Wind (1997) (Collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond, Virginia) being two works which preceded this work. This towering and emotional work references one of Murray's "first transient experience": "The first transient experience I remember was sitting underneath a huge, golden maple tree in the fall and looking up and seeing the little blue spaces between the leaves. I felt both beauty and sadness; I really wanted to responed to that mix of emotions. I think making art is trying to respond to being alive, to learning about death and how those things mingle. It's way you paint about. That's why people care about it." Elizabeth Murray, Dallas Catalogue, 1987, p. 131 A figure caught up in a dream, writhes and wrestles at the base of a giant yellow tree. For those that know Elizabeth Murray, it’s easy to see that the yellow tree also functions for Murray as a giant thought bubble. It’s arms and legs weave in and around the composition pushing and busting in on the thoughts and daydreams. A jagged and mountainous landscape framed the edges of the painting. Every element, including the very shape of the canvas, presents a particular tension between abstraction and figuration that is inherent in Murray’s work. The composition reflects her technically masterful painting process: an intensive building up of the surface and scraping down of its paint layers, often for months, until the desired effect was achieved.</image:caption>

Gift of Agnes Gund and Daniel Shapiro and Giffard and Joann Phillips (2006.019.0001) Commentary: The composition for The Sun and the Moon was planned before Murray was diagnosed with cancer. She explained: “I started painting it before I got sick. I was really having a lot of trouble with it, partly because I was starting to have these really terrible headaches…. And I put it all [in the] painting…. Then I started in on it a couple of weeks after I got back from the hospital….I had to show myself that I could work. And it was hard…. But you still have to keep at it … and gradually things start to sort themselves out. The thing that is interesting about the painting is that it shows how I had lost my mental coordination, how the forms connected.”[1] Pushing ahead, she used whatever “came to hand … adjusting the colors and marks later.”[2] Murray’s intense jumble of abstract and cartoon-like shapes derives from her personal repertoire of symbols that evoke feelings of anxiety and struggle. The right side shows a pink figure, with arms and legs spread, overwhelmed by a smothering cluster of brightly painted, angular forms. The figure’s limbs and chest are marred by red stitches. An oversized green hashtag sign, used in cartooning to indicate the force and sound of a punch, wedges through the figure’s head. Smoke blows out of its mouth, and an orange cat, perhaps Murray’s pet, Abraham, weaves around the figure’s legs, yowling. The all-seeing eye of God hovers near an open window, musical notes appear cracked, form and color clash with sound. Life in The Sun and the Moon is not still; turmoil reigns. This large scale, dynamic work was the first painting by the artist to enter The Phillips Collection, later complemented by three sculptural prints. 1.
